Welcome to the homepage of Science and Technology, where you will find all of the essential information for this department. Our aim is to inspire all of our learners to be innovative and forward thinking in a rapidly changing World. Across all key stages, our learners will have access to a wealth of experiences in a range of subject areas. Learners will develop a solid understanding of the world around them to allow them to become confident, capable, creative citizens. Technological processes and scientific enquiry involve planning, carrying out/implementing, analysing and evaluating and we aim to provide a learning journey that covers all of these elements.

Key Stage 3

Science

Our Science curriculum will cover the following range of topics:

  • Year 7 - Classification of organisms, Photosynthesis, Conservation and the relationships between organisms in food chains, Digestion and food groups and balanced diet, Solids, liquids and gases, Elements compounds and mixtures, Acids and alkalis, Smart materials, Forces, Energy, Circuits, Making electricity, Alternative energy sources.
  • Year 8 - Elements, compounds and mixtures, Separating mixtures, Circuits, Light, Health, Microbes.

Year 9 - Investigating thermal energy, Investigating solubility curves in water, Reproduction, Investigations to fit KS3 assessment criteria and containing GCSE content.

Technology

In all KS3 projects, pupils follow the Design Process to create a range of exciting and innovative products.

Product Design - The projects you will undertake in Product Design include: a night light, birdfeeder, a mirror/clock/ photo frame and an acoustic speaker. You will learn about metals, elements and alloys, electronics, and resistors.

Textiles - The two projects that you will cover at KS3 are: making a diary cover and making a make-up bag/pencil case. You will learn about the fashion and textiles with topics such as, fibres and fabrics, sustainability and CAD/CAM.

Food Technology - In Food Technology, you will make a range of exciting food products including; flapjacks/cereal bars, Welsh rarebit, savoury scones and a pasta salad. You will also learn about Food groups, the balance of good health and sustainability.

Technology

Food & Nutrition

The WJEC GCSE in Food and Nutrition equips learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to cook and apply the principles of food science, nutrition and healthy eating. It encourages learners to cook and enables them to make informed decisions about food and nutrition allowing them to acquire knowledge in order to be able to feed themselves and others affordably and nutritiously, now and later in life.

Assessment:

  • Unit 1- Principles of Food and Nutrition- examination worth 40% of final grade. a range of question
  • Unit 2- Food and Nutrition in Action- non-examination assessment worth 60% of final grade.

Engineering

We offer a range of engineering subjects. Courses range from theoretical/Science based courses allowing pupils to follow STEM careers to hands-on practical City & Guilds courses that prepare learners for the world of industrial manufacture, maintenance and construction. We feel that the courses on offer suit the needs of the learners and provide excellent pathways into further education or employment.

Product Design

  • Unit 1: Product Design written paper examination (40%): 2 hours 120 marks (80 UMS) this will consist of one paper.
  • Unit 2: Product Design Controlled Assessment Task (60%): 180 marks (120 UMS)

A course in Product Design offers a unique opportunity in the curriculum for candidates to identify and solve real problems by designing and making products or systems in a wide range of contexts relating to their personal interests. Design and Technology develops candidates' interdisciplinary skills, all six Key Skills and their capacity for imaginative, innovative thinking, creativity and independence.
